Understanding Diamond Rarity

Every natural diamond is the result of geology that cannot be repeated. But rarity is not a single quality. It is the combination of a stone's carat weight, color, clarity, and origin, measured against what the world's mines actually produce in gem quality each year.

The GemRarity score above translates that production data into a single number from 1 to 100. It is modeled from figures published by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), and the Kimberley Process, the international body that tracks rough diamond production. Sources are reviewed monthly and figures are updated as new data is published.

What makes a natural diamond rare?

Four factors combine to determine rarity: carat weight (large gem-quality rough is disproportionately scarce), color (the colorless grades are a small fraction of production), clarity (the highest clarity grades represent a small share of gem-quality output), and origin (few diamonds can document their source). The Rarity Score weighs all four against global gem-quality production data.

How is the Rarity Score calculated?

The score is a weighted model: carat weight counts for 35%, color 25%, clarity 25%, and origin 15%, with a multiplier for cut quality. Carat carries the most weight because production data shows size is the dominant driver of scarcity. The underlying figures are modeled from USGS, GIA, and Kimberley Process publications.

What does the percentile estimate mean?

When the tool says a diamond is estimated to rank in the top portion of gem-quality natural diamonds worldwide, that is a modeled estimate of combined rarity, derived from production data. It is not a count of individual stones, and it should be read as an informed estimate rather than a measured fact.

Why does origin affect rarity?

Provenance itself is scarce: most diamonds cannot document their source. A stone with verified origin, such as Canada or the closed Argyle mine in Australia, carries a documented scarcity that undocumented stones cannot claim. Unknown origin does not mean low quality. It means the scarcity premium cannot be verified.

How current is the production data?

Sources are reviewed monthly. The underlying bodies publish on their own schedules (USGS annually, the Kimberley Process annually, GIA periodically), and figures in the model are updated as new data is published.

Is the Rarity Score an appraisal or valuation?

No. The Rarity Score is an educational estimate of relative scarcity. It is not a valuation, a grading report, or an appraisal, and it does not predict price. For an authoritative grading of a specific stone, consult an independent laboratory such as GIA.
