Refundable Deposit on a Custom Engagement Ring: Which Jewelers Publish a Policy
As of October 2026. Source: The Fine Print, updated October 1, 2026.
By Rodney Noriega, CEO, Rings.com
Of the 20 jewelers we checked, one publishes a refundable deposit policy with documented conditions for custom engagement rings: Whiteflash. Two more, Ada Diamonds and Novita Diamonds, publish partial terms. At the other 17, we found no published policy, on the pages checked, saying whether a custom ring deposit is refundable.
Rings.com publishes dated price and buyer-protection data for jewelry retailers.
Rings.com does not sell jewelry on this site, though it did from 2024 to April 2026. Rings.com also sells jewelry directly to consumers elsewhere, including through RingsDeals.com. That selling is run separately from The Fine Print and has no influence over which retailers are scored, or how.
This is not a ranking and not a "best place to buy" list. It reports what retailers' own published policies say, on the pages we checked.
What this covers (and what it does not)
This applies to bespoke custom orders: a ring that needs design approval and is made from scratch. If you are choosing a setting and a stone from existing inventory in a ring builder, the deposit terms below mostly do not apply to you. Your operative protection is the return window.
What happens to your deposit: the short version
- Documented and refundable with conditions: Whiteflash.
- Partially documented: Ada Diamonds, Novita Diamonds.
- No published deposit refundability policy found: the remaining 17 of 20, including Blue Nile, Brilliant Earth, Kay, Zales, Jared, Tiffany and Costco.
This page covers deposit and cancellation terms only. It does not report how retailers score on the other protections The Fine Print scores, such as return windows or warranty coverage, so it is not a recommendation of any retailer.
"No policy published" and "no published policy found" mean the policy does not appear on the retailer's policy pages, FAQs or terms of service that we reviewed. They do not mean no policy could exist in any form. A buyer cannot rely on terms that are not written down before they pay.
Deposit and cancellation terms, retailer by retailer

19 of the 20 retailers are shown; Rare Carat is the one left out (see below).
Rare Carat is one of the 20 retailers in the audit and is counted in the 17, but it is left out of this table on purpose. Rare Carat sources inventory from third-party sellers and sets platform-level terms. The pages we reviewed carry no deposit or custom order terms, and its scores reflect platform-level terms only. A comparison of custom deposit terms would not be like for like.
Kay, Zales and Jared are separately branded Signet Jewelers storefronts, each scored on its own policy pages. On the pages we checked, none of the three publishes a policy on what happens to a buyer's money if a custom order is disputed, delayed or cancelled.
The deposit is not the problem. Unwritten rules are.
The Fine Print notes that deposits exist for a legitimate reason: jewelers collect them to cover stone sourcing and production costs before work begins. Its point is that the question is whether the terms for refunding that deposit are written down before you pay. Its advice: if a jeweler cannot point you to a written policy first, assume the deposit is non-refundable.
The Fine Print calls the period after design approval the highest-risk window: production is starting, your money is committed, and at most retailers in the audit there is no published policy on what you are owed if the order falls through.
Four questions to ask before you pay a custom ring deposit
- Is my deposit refundable, and under what conditions? Get the answer in writing, on a page or in an email, before you pay.
- Can I cancel a custom ring order after design approval? Ask what you recover at each stage: before the design is approved, after approval, and once production starts.
- Do I get my money back if the ring is delayed? Ask whether there is a promised completion date and what happens if it is missed.
- Does the warranty cover the center stone, and does an outside jeweler's repair void it? In this audit, 12 retailers carry warranty terms that end coverage after repairs by an outside jeweler.
How we checked
The Fine Print scores 20 jewelry retailers on nine buyer protection fields. Deposit and cancellation terms carry 33 of 100 points combined because they govern the highest financial risk. Data was collected May 25, 2026, with a full policy re-check on September 19 and further re-scores on September 30, 2026. The Tiffany, Clean Origin, Grown Brilliance and Brilliant Earth pages could not be loaded for direct verification in September, so those four retailers' entries rest on the earlier collection dates. Policies change, so confirm any retailer's current terms in writing before you order.
Read the full methodology and the retailer selection policy on The Fine Print page. Rings.com receives no compensation from the retailers included for inclusion or ranking, and no retailer has any editorial control over the methodology or results.

Frequently asked questions
Which jewelers have a refundable deposit on custom engagement rings?
Of 20 jewelers checked, Whiteflash publishes a refundable deposit policy with documented conditions. Ada Diamonds and Novita Diamonds publish partial terms. At the other 17, no refundable deposit policy was found on the pages checked.
Is a custom engagement ring deposit refundable?
It depends on the jeweler, and at most of them the answer is not published. The Fine Print's advice: if a jeweler cannot show you a written policy before you pay, assume the deposit is non-refundable.
Can I cancel a custom ring order and get my money back?
Only if the jeweler's terms allow it. Among the 20 jewelers checked, Whiteflash publishes full cancellation terms. Kay, Zales and Jared published no cancellation policy on the pages we checked. Ask for the cancellation terms for each stage in writing.
What is the cancellation policy for a custom ring after design approval?
The Fine Print calls this the highest-risk window, and at most retailers in the audit no policy is published for it. Ask what you recover once production has started.
Does this apply if I build a ring from existing inventory?
Mostly no. The deposit terms apply to bespoke orders made from scratch. For ring-builder purchases from existing inventory, the return window is your main protection.
